What happens during a porta potty service visit?

Quick answer

A porta potty service visit has 6 steps, and the tech does them in the same order each time. The tank gets pumped, the stall gets scrubbed and disinfected, a fresh deodorizer charge goes in, paper and sanitizer get restocked, and the sink gets refilled if the unit has one.

  1. Pump the waste tank. The tech runs a vacuum hose from the service truck into the tank and pumps it empty.
  2. Scrub the stall. Walls, seat, lid, urinal and floor get scrubbed to remove dirt, mud and splashes.
  3. Disinfect touch points. Seat, door handle, lock, urinal and paper holder get a disinfectant spray.
  4. Add a fresh deodorizer charge. A few gallons of water plus blue deodorizer go back in the tank. In winter, the charge includes salt brine or non-toxic antifreeze.
  5. Restock. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer get refilled.
  6. Refill the sink. Units with a sink and hand-wash stations get fresh water, soap and towels.

Before leaving, the tech checks the door, latch and vent, and picks up trash around the base.

How often are porta potties cleaned?

Quick answer

Construction and monthly porta potties are cleaned once a week, and that weekly service is included in the 28-day rate. Event porta potties arrive cleaned and stocked, then are not serviced during a 1–3 day rental unless you add an extra service. Busy sites or crews over 10 can get twice-weekly service.

Rental typeService scheduleWhat it costs
Construction / monthlyWeekly, same day each weekIncluded in the 28-day rate (standard from $145)
Busy jobsite, crew over 10Twice weeklyExtra visits at $55 each
Event, 1–3 daysClean and stocked on arrival, no mid-rental serviceIncluded in the event rate (standard from $165)
Long or heavy eventAdd a mid-event service$55 per visit

The schedule matches tank size. A standard unit has a 60-gallon tank and handles roughly 200 uses between services. A deluxe flushing unit handles roughly 250–300 flushes. Planning a party instead? Our event porta potty rental page covers adding a mid-event service.

What is the blue liquid in a porta potty?

Quick answer

The blue liquid in a porta potty is a deodorizer mixed with a few gallons of water at the bottom of the tank. The blue dye hides what is in the tank. The chemistry slows the bacteria that cause odor, and the fragrance covers what is left. Every service adds a fresh charge after pumping.

Older blends used formaldehyde. Most deodorizers today use other biocides or enzyme blends that break down waste and are easier on treatment plants. The liquid is not meant to be touched, but a splash on skin just needs soap and water.

If the liquid turns dark green or brown well before service day, the tank is getting heavy use. That is a sign to add a service visit.

How do you keep a porta potty from smelling?

Quick answer

A porta potty smells least when the lid stays closed, the vent stays clear, and the unit sits in shade. Heat speeds up odor, so a unit in full July sun smells stronger by afternoon. Weekly service with a fresh deodorizer charge handles the rest for a normal crew of about 10.

  • Close the lid. The vent stack pulls air up and out when the lid is down.
  • Keep the door shut. A propped door kills the vent draft.
  • Pick shade. The north side of a building or trailer works well.
  • Keep the roof clear. Snow or debris on the vent traps odor inside.
  • Do not add bleach or cleaners. Household chemicals can react with the deodorizer and make the smell worse.

What should never go in a porta potty?

Quick answer

Only human waste and toilet paper belong in a porta potty tank. Wipes, paper towels, diapers, feminine products, bottles, cans and cigarette butts clog the vacuum hose and slow every service. Paint, oil, solvents and concrete washout are worse, since they can ruin the tank and cannot go to a wastewater plant with the waste.

OK in the tankNever in the tank
Human wasteWipes, even "flushable" ones
Toilet paperPaper towels and diapers
Small amounts of urinal waterFeminine products
Bottles, cans, food and trash
Paint, oil, solvents, concrete washout

On jobsites, put a trash can next to the unit. Most foreign objects end up in the tank because there was nowhere else to throw them.

What are the signs a porta potty needs an extra service?

Quick answer

A porta potty needs an extra service when the tank level is near the seat opening, the paper is gone, or the smell gets strong well before service day. An extra service visit costs $55. Text us early in the day, and we schedule the visit as soon as the route allows.

  • Waste is visible near the top of the tank.
  • The blue liquid has turned dark brown.
  • Toilet paper or sanitizer ran out 2 days or more before service.
  • The sink or hand-wash station is out of water.
  • Your crew grew, or you added a Saturday shift.

If you hit the limit every week, switch to twice-weekly service or add a unit. Our construction porta potty rental page covers crew sizing and service options.

What happens to a porta potty after pickup?

Quick answer

After pickup, the porta potty is pumped and the waste goes to a licensed treatment facility. The unit is then pressure-washed inside and out, inspected, disinfected and restocked before its next rental. That means every porta potty you rent has been fully cleaned since the last renter used it.

The inspection checks the door, the spring, the latch, the vent and the tank for cracks. Units with damage get repaired or pulled from service. Graffiti gets removed before the next rental.

That is why every event unit arrives clean, stocked with 2 rolls of toilet paper and hand sanitizer, and ready to use.

How does cleaning affect porta potty rental cost?

Quick answer

Cleaning is built into porta potty rental cost. A monthly standard unit starts from $145 per 28 days with weekly service included. An event unit starts from $165 for 1–3 days, delivered clean and stocked. Extra service visits cost $55 each, and there is no separate cleaning or removal fee.

Every quote is itemized: units, days or cycles, delivery and pickup, service, and Ohio sales tax. For full pricing on every unit, see our porta potty rental cost guide. For months-long jobs, our long-term porta potty rental page explains how the cycle renews.

Common questions

Is cleaning included when I rent a porta potty for a job?

Cleaning is included on construction and monthly rentals. Weekly service covers pumping, scrubbing, disinfecting, a fresh deodorizer charge, and restocking paper and sanitizer. A standard unit starts from $145 per 28-day cycle with that service included. Twice-weekly service is available at $55 per extra visit.

Will the porta potty come clean and stocked for my party?

Every event porta potty arrives cleaned, disinfected and stocked with 2 rolls of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The unit is not serviced during a 1–3 day rental unless you add a service visit for $55. Most backyard parties never need one.

Can you service a porta potty I already own?

Service visits are available only on units rented from us, since weekly routes, deodorizer charges and parts are matched to those units. A monthly rental can replace the unit you have, with weekly service included from $145 per 28 days and nothing for you to repair or store.

My porta potty filled with rainwater. Can you pump it out?

Rainwater can get into a unit through a door left open or a damaged vent. Text us a photo, and we can add an extra service visit for $55 to pump and recharge the tank. Keep the door closed and the lid down between uses during storms.

Who refills the sink if my site has no water?

Our tech refills the sink on every service visit, so your site does not need a water hookup. A hand-wash station holds about 20 gallons for roughly 200–250 washes. A deluxe flushing unit holds about 20 gallons of fresh flush water. Busy sites may need a second weekly visit.

Is the blue porta potty liquid dangerous to pets or kids?

The blue porta potty liquid is not something to drink or touch, so keep kids and pets out of the tank. A small splash on skin washes off with soap and water. If a child or pet swallows any, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 and keep the product label handy.
