How does a hand washing station rental in Cleveland work, and does it need a hose?

Quick answer

The hand washing station needs no hose and no power. It carries about 20 gallons of fresh water in its own tank. Guests press a foot pump, water runs into the basin, and the gray water drains into a separate tank below. Soap and paper towel dispensers sit right above each basin.

The station is two-sided, so 2 people wash at the same time, one on each side. That keeps the line short when a crowd leaves the toilets together.

We fill the clean water and stock soap and towels before delivery. You don't add anything. Set a trash can next to the station for used towels.

Tech specs: how many people can one sink station serve?

Quick answer

One sink station serves roughly 200 to 250 hand washes from its 20 gallons of fresh water. It measures about 34 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 56 inches tall. Two basins let 2 people wash at once, which handles a 100-guest, 4-hour party paired with 2 toilets.

The station is narrow enough to roll through most side gates. It still needs a level spot, or water pools on one side of the basin.

Is it cheaper to get a toilet with a sink or a toilet plus a hand washing station?

Quick answer

A standard toilet plus a separate hand washing station costs about $260 for an event: $165 plus $95. A deluxe flushing unit with a sink inside starts at $265. The price is close, so choose by layout. A separate station lets 2 people wash at once and can sit near food.

  • Pick the deluxe flushing unit for a small party where one toilet is enough and you want a flush and mirror. See the flushing porta potty rental.
  • Pick a separate station when you have 2 or more toilets, a food line or a buffet. One station serves 2 to 3 toilets.
  • Pick both for weddings: a deluxe unit for guests, plus a station by the catering tent.

Monthly, a station starts at $90 per 28 days with weekly service. See every price line on our porta potty rental cost page.

How many hand washing stations do I need for a food event?

Quick answer

A food event needs 1 hand washing station for every 2 to 3 toilets. A 150-guest graduation party with 3 standard units needs 1 station, and 6 units for 300 guests need 2 to 3 stations. Put one station near the toilets and, if you can, a second near the food.

Hand sanitizer kills many germs, but it doesn't clear grease, sauce or dirt. A real sink matters at cookouts, fish fries and festival food stands.

Food vendors may have their own sink rules from the local health department. Check your permit first. For full event planning, read our event porta potty rental page and work out toilet counts with the porta potty sizing guide.

Do construction sites need a hand washing station under OSHA?

Quick answer

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on construction sites where workers handle paints, coatings or other harmful contaminants. The station must be sanitary, near the work and stocked with water, soap and towels. A hand washing station at $90 per 28 days with weekly service covers that need.

Painting, coating, demolition and lead work all raise the need for a real sink on site. Read the full text at OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51.

Each weekly service refills the 20-gallon tank, empties gray water, scrubs the basins and restocks soap and towels. Large crews can add a second visit for $55. Learn more on our construction porta potty rental page.

Does the hand washing station freeze in winter?

Quick answer

The hand washing station can freeze when lows stay below 28°F, because it holds fresh water in an open tank. From November through March, we can swap the water station for a sanitizer dispenser on request. Toilet tanks get a non-toxic antifreeze charge, but hand-wash water can't be treated that way.

On a winter job site, ask us when the forecast turns. We'll switch the station back to water when the cold breaks.

Lake-effect snow can bury the foot pumps. Keep a 4-foot path shoveled to the station and a truck path within 25 feet. More tips are on our winter porta potty rental tips post.

When is a separate hand washing station the wrong choice?

Quick answer

A separate hand washing station is the wrong choice for a small party with only 1 toilet and no food. In that case, a deluxe flushing unit gives a sink inside for about the same price. A station is also a poor fit on a freezing winter site, where sanitizer works better.

A restroom trailer already has sinks inside, so most trailer rentals skip the station unless food is served far away. Compare that option on our restroom trailer rental page.

Every standard porta potty and handicap porta potty includes hand sanitizer, which may be enough for a short, no-food event. See all units side by side on our services comparison.

Common questions

How much is a hand washing station rental?

A hand washing station rental starts at $95 for a 1–3 day event, with delivery and pickup included. Monthly rentals start at $90 per 28 days with weekly refill and cleaning. Ohio sales tax is added, and there are no card or fuel fees.

How many people can wash at once at the hand wash station?

Two people can wash at once, one at each basin on opposite sides of the station. Each side has its own foot pump, soap and towel dispenser. A full 20-gallon tank covers roughly 200 to 250 washes.

I have no water on site. Who refills the sink?

We fill the station's 20-gallon tank before delivery, so you need no water on site. On monthly rentals, the weekly service refills the water and empties the gray water. For a busy weekend event, add a $55 mid-rental service.

Is the hand washing station water safe to drink?

The station water is for hand washing only, not drinking. Guests should use bottled water or a cooler for drinks. The basins drain into a separate gray-water tank, and we empty and clean that tank at each service.

Can the hand washing station go right next to the porta potty?

The station fits right beside a porta potty on the same level pad. Leave about 3 feet in front of each basin so guests can stand and use the foot pump. Next to the toilets is the most common spot.

Do you rent eye wash stations?

We don't rent eye wash stations; our sinks are hand washing stations only. The foot-pump basin does not meet emergency eyewash rules. Job sites that handle chemicals should buy a dedicated eyewash unit from a safety supplier.

Can I add a hand washing station to an order I already booked?

Adding a hand washing station to an existing order is easy. Text or call us with your order name and we'll put the station on the same truck. Changes are free up to 24 hours before delivery.
